Mellanox this week announced new HDR InfiniBand switches, adapter cards, and cables with 200Gbps throughput. The company is targeting high-performance computing and machine learning use cases with the products.
The new Quantum switch line includes a 1U device that supports either 40 ports of 200Gbps HDR InfiniBand or 80 ports of 100Gbps HDR, for a total switch throughput of 16Tbits per second. Mellanox says the Quantum switch has just 90ns latency.
A modular version of the switch will also be released. This modular version will start at 200 ports and extend up to 800 ports of 200Gbps. “It’s a monster,” said Gilad Shainer, VP of marketing at Mellanox.
The new switch also includes in-network compute capabilities, enabling it to run basic data reduction and data aggregation algorithms on data as the data moves across the switch fabric. The algorithms are implemented on the switch ASIC itself, so data doesn’t have to be loaded into and out of a CPU for processing.
Shainer says the in-network compute process won’t affect the switch’s latency.
As mentioned, Mellanox also announced a new adapter, the ConnectX-6, which supports both 200Gbps InfiniBand and Ethernet.
The adapter supports PCIe Gen3 and Gen4 (32 lanes and 16 lanes respectively). Mellanox says it can handle 200 million messages per second with 0.6 microsecond latency.
The adapter offers a variety of in-network computing modules to offload tasks that would otherwise have to be handled by a CPU, including networking functions, encryption and decryption, RDMA, and NVMe over Fabric storage.
Don’t Forget The Cables
Mellanox will also have new copper and fiber optic InfiniBand cables available. The HDR 200G Direct Attach Copper QSFP cables and splitters can extend up to 3 meters. The HDR 200G Silicon Photonics Optical Active QSFP cables extend up to 100 meters.
All these products—the switches, adapters, and cables—will ship in early 2017. Pricing details were not available.
