As you might guess by number of technologies discussed here it’s not a sponsored post. During last few weeks I came across multiple very mind blowing products and it’s great there is an opportunity to review them here and hopefully it will help others with a big picture what you get from these vendors.
Datrium – represents an exciting group of really respected founders coming from previously successful companies such as NetApp, DataDomain, VMware where they were original technology architects and developed the products. The goal of Datrium offering is to provide the best possible storage performance while delivering features such as de-duplication, encryption and snapshotting on fly. All of it sounds really cool, when you start digging inside of the technology – it seems there is lot of details and Datrium has the solid answer to all the questions that the audience could come up during the presentation. My biggest problem talking to customers about a technology like this – it’s a huge challenge for enterprises to (a) measure current storage performance demand and (b) estimate required IOPS and latency. And if you don’t have this two metrics it becomes very abstract task to demonstrate the benefit and value of the product. It’s not Datrium’s specific challenge,it’s more general performance and storage performance market problem
Rubrik – if several years ago Palo Alto firewall was a new-generation firewall, Rubrik is certainly a new generation backup solution. Besides instant restore, fully automated scheduling and resource distribution of backup jobs based on infrastructure load, it also offers cloud based storage and ability to convert VMs to different formats (i.e. VMware VM to EC2 Instance and vice versa). Also Rubrik claims that they resolved SQL DB quesing problem during backup that seem to be never resolved before. if you’re looking for a new backup solution – it’s worthwhile to consider Rubrik and for any security-minded person annoyed with imagining (or experiencing) consequences of ransomware attacks – instant recovery is really what we need today and Rubrik provides such functionality. It seems that there are other vendors getting in this space, after I written this review I was provided with 30 seconds overview of Datto that might be addressing the issue of ransomware and instant restore too.
OpenDNS – as old time Websense user I’m a huge fan of category based web-filtering – nothing can be more logical and straight-forward on management side especially while complex work of categorizing is done behind the scenes. OpenDNS simplifies web-filtering by offering their DNS servers instead of those provided by your ISP. The caveat here – what if end-users are specifying ip address in the browser or the users are savvy enough to point to a different DNS server to avoid being blocked. OpenDNS partially answering that problem by integrating their solution with Cisco Anyconnect – the software is centrally managed through the enterprise policy console and can be forcing OpenDNS setting even when VPN-connection is turned off.
AVI Networks – probably the coolest product and the company I saw since Nicira. Complete SDN Load Balancing solution that also provides WAF functionality, can be run on/off-prem or mixed (beauty of data and control plane separation). The service-mash and container solution are essence of the offering and allow complete automation and independence. API-design offers a very efficient integration with different compute, cloud and virtualization platforms, as well as orchestration and monitoring tools. If I got your attention here – please listen to the Packet Pushers recent podcast on AVI Networks and its service-mesh overview talk.
