Ivan makes the point that companies with R&D budgets define quality software and measures Cisco, Juniper and Arista by the size of their R&D.
“Long story short: it seems Dell and HP aren’t investing enough in R&D to be a viable long-term networking competitor. The best way forward for them seems to be to change the business model”
Is IBM getting back into Networking ?
Until today, that is, when it announced it would open two proof-of-concept labs – which IBM is calling “Network Innovation Centers” – in Nice, France, and Dallas, Texas, “where clients can explore Software Defined Networking, virtualization and analytics-driven [network] automation technologies and services,” IBM said in a statement.
IBM had reportedly considered selling off its SDN unit in early 2014, as the Lenovo deal was being finalized. Instead, the roughly 135 developers then working on SDN split off from the outgoing x86 division and were integrated into IBM’s cloud services unit, IBM CTO of Cloud Services Mac Devine revealed in an interview earlier this week.
Cisco Wins A Major Supply Agreement against expectation with Verizon
This is for DWDM / Metro Ethernet at 100G not for IP Routing/MPLS networks.
Verizon announced that it would be working with Cisco and one other supplier to design and build a next-generation 100G metro network in the United States that will deliver improved scalability, functionality and efficiency. To meet Verizon’s mission of offering its customers high-capacity video and wireless solutions, it has decided to modernize its metro optical network. Cisco is honored to be part of this important network transformation.

an agile service-creation environment, combining the capabilities of open, standards-based Segment Routing with software-defined-networking (SDN)
Cisco has packaged the scale and carrier-class performance of Cisco IOS XR as a virtualized router. The IOS XRv 9000 Virtual Router, to be available in the second quarter of 2015, further increases service agility and provides a low cost entry point for the IOS XR family. Additionally, IOS XRv operates on x86-based hardware for on demand, cost optimized service deployment and complements the existing Cisco Cloud Services Routers (CSR1000v) targeted at the enterprise and managed services markets.
