Show 07 – Hiding in Plain Sight – Enterprise MPLS

Another Deep Dive this week on Enterprise MPLS with Ivan Pepelnjak. Ivan is the author of many Cisco Press books and senior figure in the industry and CCIE #1354 and gives Ethan and Greg a serious lesson in MPLS and how the Enterprise would use, design and manage an MPLS network. We cover some of the traps, tricks and factor in making it work.

Greg is making notes to avoid really smart people in the future.

Next week, will definitely be a quickfire show where we look at industry events and stories,.

I didn't understand 90% of this episode, but it was fascinating to hear you guys throw ideas around. As a suggestion, maybe a short, high level overview of the technology under discussion would be useful for those of us who have CCIE level knowledge but want to learn.

Next weeks' show will be a quickfire show where we will go into lighter / easier topics. I'm thinking we will alternate for light / heavy every few weeks and cover as many topics as possible.

Unfortunately, MPLS is not a good topic for a light and easy overview……

    • http://livingonthecloud.blogspot.com JR

Er… that should have been "for those of us who _don't_ have CCIE level knowledge".

      • http://etherealmind.com Greg Ferro

Don't mind me, I just SOUND intelligent. In real life, I have the same problem.

I loved this episode! As you mentioned, most people think, "Ahhhhh, MPLS is for the service providers". And you were right! At least, about me! I use MPLS for my global WAN, but that's handled via Verizon and Sprint.

I now know why others are talking about MPLS in the enterprise. When Ivan explained about 1 reason to use MPLS in the Enteprise was for the vpn, I instantly thought of, "VLAN's across Layer3".

Brilliant! Keep up the fantastic show! The networking industry has never had this level of "technical" discussion before.

    Love it!

Thanks Aaron. Got any ideas for future shows that we could look into ?

Great show! It's amazing to listen to Ivan – the extent of knowledge that he has is just mind boggling….
I own both volumes of his [MPLS] books, and find them extremely well written – not an easy read, by any mean – but great coverage of a rather complex topic.

    Thank you

      Thanks Doron

We will have more Ivan real soon. He is often busy when we are recording so haven't been able to get it to match up.

If you want to know what this MPLS thing is all about
I recommend reading the chapter 'MPLS VPN Routing Model'
from MPLS Configuration on Cisco IOS Software
by Lancy Lobo CCIE No. 4690, Umesh Lakshman
    Cisco Press, ISBN 1-58705-199-0

…or the original RFC 4364, both offer great explanations.

Ivan's books are between my favorites and offer deeper knowledge.

This conversation was really fun !
