With the winter holidays behind us, the tech conference season is back in swing. RSA recently concluded, Cisco Live Europe is happening as I write this, and hotel rooms are being booked for the annual spring migration to Las Vegas.
So what compels IT pros to drape lanyards around their necks, wander endless hallways, and spend long hours in cavernous ballrooms deprived of coffee and sunlight? It has to be more than free t-shirts and drawings to win iPads.
We asked readers what’s most valuable for them about tech conferences in the latest issue of our Human Infrastructure newsletter .
Respondents had five options, and the most popular was to learn about new technologies and products. Interacting with peers was a close second, which makes sense to me. It can be nice to check in with other IT pros, see what they’re up to, and weigh in on one another’s challenges and solutions.
Expert presentations was the third-highest response, which also makes sense; you can come away with a head full of information after a few days on site.
What I didn’t expect is that two options would get zero respondents: no one selected hands-on training and talking to vendors. Of course, we’re dealing with a very small sample size (just 25 respondents) and I think that’s a factor here.
