Citrix today announced CloudBridge Enterprise Edition, an appliance family that integrates both SD-WAN and WAN optimization into a single device, and unifies them through one management interface.
“It’s a single pane of management, not little silos or functions managed separately,” said Chalan Aras, Citrix’s VP and GM of CloudBridge, in an interview.
By integrating SD-WAN functions—including the aggregation of multiple link types and the ability to move a flow from one link to another based on performance metrics—with WAN optimization, Citrix aims to distinguish itself in a very crowded enterprise market.
WAN optimization capabilities include protocol optimization, compression, deduplication, and video caching. Aras said that the appliances have been sized with reserved capacity to make sure there’s no performance degradation when the optimization features are used alongside SD-WAN functions.
In the SD-WAN market, Citrix is one of several established vendors that have SD-WAN and WAN optimization/acceleration products in their portfolios, and it makes sense that Citrix would merge these capabilities into a single product.
Note that Silver Peak already offers Boost, a WAN optimization software package, for its EdgeConnect SD-WAN products.
Citrix’s Aras said he anticipates WAN optimization will disappear as a standalone product category within the next five years, but also noted that Citrix will continue to sell SD-WAN and WAN optimization platforms separately for customers that don’t want the integrated package.
He also noted that Enterprise Edition will add other services besides WAN optimization in subsequent releases, but didn’t provide specifics.
CloudBridge Enterprise Edition comes in six appliance models for large branches, with optimized WAN capacity ranging from 10Mbps to 155Mbps. The company did not provide details on pricing.
