Lots of work is being done on wireless to improve user safety and simplify the experience for ad hoc network users. The connection experience can be pretty grim when you’re accessing WiFi at a coffee shop or attempting to use guest wireless at the office.
What you really want is to have always-on, always-present network connectivity like your smartphone has. It should have enough bandwidth for video, low enough jitter for a voice codec, and no consumption charge for bytes used.
I don’t want ad hoc WiFi. What I really want is better 3G/4G/5G network that just works all the time without constraints.
The reason people put up with ad hoc WiFi access is to avoid using broadband because it costs too much. That’s the thing that really needs fixing.
