Fujitsu Network Communications is launching an SD-WAN offering for service providers. The service is based on software and appliances from Silver Peak.
Initially available in North America, the Fujitsu offering will allow service providers to roll out a white label SD-WAN service to their own customers by tapping into a multi-tenant infrastructure managed by Fujitsu.
Fujitsu NOCs will run Silver Peak’s Unity Orchestrator SP software (‘SP’ is Silver Peak’s multi-tenant version). Unity Orchestrator configures and manages the branch SD-WAN appliances.
Service providers will deploy these appliances, called EdgeConnect, at their customers’ branch and remote offices and then operate them for customers. EdgeConnect can also be deployed as a virtual instance running on a server.
Service providers can segregate their customers within Unity Orchestrator SP, handle licensing, and give customers their own portals for reporting and monitoring.
Bring Me A VNF
Nav Chander, Senior Director for the service provider unit at Silver Peak, said his company and Fujitsu are at work on SD-WAN delivered as a VNF.
One reason for the development effort is to give customers and providers more deployment options.
But it’s also an opportunity for providers to link together—and then sell—a variety of integrated services, in which SD-WAN is just one in a chain. Other options could include WAN optimization, firewalls, and other security functions.
However, it’s still a work in progress. “Integrating VNFs is complex” said Chander in an interview. One challenge is integrating virtualized services into MSPs’ provisioning, orchestration, and billing systems.
“It’s going to take several years,” said Chander. “The majority of service providers will buy appliances because it’s faster to go to market and turn up a service right now.” But he anticipates that within a few years, the market will see a significant uptake of VNFs.
The deal with Fujitsu isn’t the first time Silver Peak has been leveraged for a services offering. Last year Silver Peak signed a deal to provide the software and appliances for a new SD-WAN offering from network service provider Masergy.
