Once again we are talking about the Internet and moves that are underway in the Routing Internet Registries to add more security to BGP routing that underpins that Internet. This is known as BGP Origin Validation using RPKI.

What is RPKI ?

RPKI is a robust security framework for verifying the association between resource holders and their Internet resources via resource certification. In this context, ‘resource holders’ are organizations such as Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), Internet Service Providers (ISPs), or end-user organizations, while ‘Internet resources’ are IPv4 and IPv6 address blocks and Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs).

What is a Resource ?

A resource is any grouping of Internet addresses or ASNs; numbers that describe a computer or a network’s location. Routers use these numbers much like postal services use street and house numbers to define where people live.

Guest Speakers

Today we joined by Alex Band from the RIPE RIR. Alex has been teaching and communicating about RPKI and BGP Origin Validation for the last three years. We are also joined by Russ White, well known for his many textbooks with Cisco Press, his long tenure at Cisco and involvement with CCIE and CCDE programs. Russ now works for Verizon and also writes at Packet Pushers.
