I wanted to take just a moment and share a video that one of my twitter friends shared with me. This video is of the final stage of the interview process and outlines the negotiation required to come to a mutually agreeable compensation level. Of key importance, it highlights several items that should be understood prior to going into the negotiation. Those interviewing for technical jobs can better prepare for salary negotiations by watching this video and thinking through various points prior to this stage of the hiring process.
Planning for Salary Negotiations
- Know Your Expectations
- Understand the Market Range for Position
- Determine the Value You Bring to the Organization
- Look for Other Ways to Reach the Desired Level
- Don’t Push the Issue to the Point it is Adversarial
As demonstrated in this video, salary negotiation requires some preparation. It is important to realize that you’ll likely not perform well (at least for long) in a position that you don’t believe you’re being appropriately compensated. Likewise, a company will likely be more critical if they feel that you are overzealous in your expectations. The bottom line is that an employment relationship should be a mutually agreeable and equitable. The key to this balance is understanding what you bring to the relationship and how that value manifests as profit or cost savings for the business..
