There’s a lot of talk and industry movement around network disaggregation, in which the switch operating system is separate from the switch hardware. With network disaggregation customers have an opportunity to purchase and operate network gear more like they do servers.
There’s a variety of open source and commercial switch OSs available to choose from, and while hardware has typically been available from OEMs, traditional vendors such as Dell and HPE are getting in on the act.
In a recent issue of the Human Infrastructure newsletter, we asked subscribers about their use of or attitude toward network disaggregation. Based on the 31 responses we’ve got, this technology has a ways to go toward widespread adoption.
