I was listening to Packet Pushers (Show 63 – The First Shot of Strong Opinion) the other day, and they were “flapping their chins” answering a listener’s question. It inspired me to share my process and add to the conversation. The question was as follows:
“Is there any mileage in a show discussing how different people go about building new skills, in particular when faced with a new subject, a new product or a new technology. Where do you start, what tools do you use to keep tech notes, bookmarks, documentation etc. How do you reinforce learning, build a lab and keep yourself from forgetting it all in three months.”
After the show was over, I quickly put my process into electronic form. Below is what I came up with. Keep in mind this does not just apply to studying for an exam. This is how I learn any new topic, whether it is for an exam or technology I need to implement at work.
So take a look below at my beautifully crafted flowchart – what were you expecting? How else is an nerd engineer supposed to organize a process!? I have detailed the materials and hardware I use at each point in the process as well.
So there you have it – a little insight into my process. How does this compare to yours? Am I missing something significant that you would add?
Anki – a program which makes remembering things easy.
