To be honest I really tried hard to find a name for this article. Maybe it is not convenient and if you have better idea please let me know in the comment.
I want to mention sub optimality and stretch in the networks while using routing protocols but the idea actually came to me from the business site. I want to start with an analogy.
As a network engineer , senior network engineer, network consultant or even architect we have managers, directors , CTO so on. Different organizations may have different titles for the positions but let’s assume the hierarchy as network engineer , manager and director for simplicity.
Most of the time network engineers report to managers directly , but sometimes maybe after some big achievement, completed project etc. they may want to see your director and even upper level management to see the results. We want visibility guys, don’t we? !. If they do not aware about those achievements and only they believe what your first manager says , you might be in trouble :).
Your manager might see you as his/her competitor and can give you a low rating, bad feedback for the performance evaluation. Of course this is rare ( ! ) but might happen, right?. Because your two level upper management unfortunately not aware from anything, so they will sign also the documents which is given by the managers. So we should be visible !. I do not know how it can be happen , I am really not a manager or good business guy but I would want to hear from you guys.
How is this related with networking ?. I can hear the voice of those routing geeks. Yes EIGRP works definitely like this. Also OSPF and IS-IS multi area/domain implementations also work in this way.
EIGRP routers do not know the entire topology. They just believe what their neighbor tells them. OSPF non backbone routers know only their particular area’s topology and they believe what their ABR says. That is why for those networks always sub optimality might occur since you do not know entire topology , you just believe what your neighbor says , not your neighbor’s neighbor. Even spanning tree shows respect to the network engineers , so spanning tree creates a tree to the root while taking end to end cost into consideration.Since I do not want this post to be too much technical , forget about stretch and I believe Russ wrote about it for the packetpushers , still I recommend you to check it.
Director believes what the manager says, He does not aware all the achievement of network engineer :).
Hope it was not boring and since this was my first non-technical post I really want to know.
