It’s somewhat difficult to understand why VMware would put its flagship SDDC products in the heart of a major competitor, Amazon AWS. I think the key to understanding VMware on AWS is to comprehend the overall vision that VMware has for the future.
In this video, I take information from VMworld and put together how I see this as one step down a path of meeting customers wherever they go.
VMware isn’t staying inside the private cloud: it wants to embrace all the clouds for a much larger scope. You can’t examine VMware-on-AWS alone; you should consider it as part of a multi-pronged plan to meet customers wherever they go, if and/or when they leave the private cloud empire that VMware has built.
I hope to publish more about the other aspects of VMware’s public cloud strategy, including Cloud Services, App Defense, and NSX Cloud. Yes, it’s confusing and VMware is doing a shabby job of packaging its product but hey, big companies tend towards stupid when the market is changing. On the plus side, I get to try and explain it.
